MLA Portfolio
The MLA
Portfolio has three basic requirements: a written pre-course
survey, final survey, and a collection of artifacts from
your MLA program coursework with inclusion
forms to explain
your artifacts. This collection shows evidence that you have experienced
growth during the program and have met the following “Essential
Characteristics”:
• A Strong Knowledge Base.
• Enriched Written Communication Skills.
• Oral Communication Skills.
• Organization Skills.
• Decision Making Skills
• Critical Thinking Skills
What is a “pre-course survey” and
what information should I include in it?
Your pre-course
survey is a 1-2 page word picture of who you are and what you want to achieve
from our MLA program. Include particular aspects of this program that prompted
you to enroll, your academic goals, and your expectations of our MLA program.
You should complete your pre-course survey as soon as you start the program.
Put it in your portfolio binder.
What type of “artifacts” should be
included?
The artifacts are papers and projects you select from your program’s
coursework. These artifacts should be assignments graded or assessed by the
instructor of the course. You will need one artifact from each core
course and two additional artifacts from courses of your choice. You
are welcome to include additional artifacts if you so choose.
Core coursework for our MLA program includes one course from each
of the following categories:
• Art (ART)
• History (HIS) • Literature (LIT)
• Philosophy or Religion (PHIL or REL)
• Science and Culture (SCC)
• Sociology (SOC)
Am I required to submit any type of form(s) with my artifacts?
Yes. You will complete an inclusion
form for each of your artifacts. You will also provide a written final
survey form that refers to your personal experiences and growth during
the program.
How should I organize my portfolio?
Organization is important, but how you organize your information
is completely up to you. You can collect your artifacts in a binder,
a box, or a CD. It’s your choice!
When is my portfolio due?
You will turn in your completed portfolio during your
assigned Portfolio Presentation meeting prior to graduation from
the program. Additional information follows under “How do
I deliver my portfolio?”
How do I deliver my portfolio?
You will present your portfolio at an MLA Portfolio
Presentation with others who are finishing the program. These
Portfolio Presentations are scheduled in the late spring and
late fall. You will be notified of these presentation dates via
email to your Baker account. Flyers will also be posted on the
bulletin boards inside each of our classrooms.
How will the portfolio
be assessed?
Your portfolio will be assessed using the MLA
Portfolio Rubric.
Will my portfolio be returned to me?
After your portfolio is assessed, it will be available for pickup at our Overland
Park administrative office.
MLA Capstone Project
A capstone project may be arranged as an option for completion of the
last three elective credits in the MLA program requirements. Capstone
projects must be approved by Academic Advisors,
the faculty member, and the Dean to assure compliance with degree plan, academic
credibility, and administrative approval.
The capstone project is similar to an independent study. Its purpose is
to integrate the thinking that has evolved through completion of the MLA coursework
and relate it to professional and community activities. Examples of capstone
project formats are:
* A philosophical essay on a relevant issue.
* An original research project involving interviews
or questionnaires.
* An extensive research paper.
* Other formats approved by the Dean and supervising
faculty member.
A careful statement must be prepared by the student prior to enrollment,
providing title, general outline, purpose, procedure and bibiliography for the
project. Forms for such statements are available from Academic
Advisors. If the capstone project is approved, registration
must be completed with Academic Records and tuition paid in advance. |
