“Having graduated from the MBA program in 2000, it’s exciting to be back at Baker University on the “other side of the table.” It’s exciting to be working with adult students, which sometimes requires a different approach to teaching. They bring a wealth of life and work experiences to enhance the learning process. What I find most challenging is discovering new answers to the always-asked question in algebra, “Can you give me an example of how you would use this in real life?” I’m also in awe of how the students juggle full-time work loads, family (sometimes from several generations), and a full schedule of college courses. Knowing how precious their time is, it’s a challenge to help them get the most benefit out of every minute in the classroom and every homework assignment outside the classroom.
In trying to accomplish this, I’m so thankful for the support from the Baker University administration, staff, and fellow faculty members. From regularly scheduled faculty meetings and workshops, to observations from peer reviewers, to walking into the classroom and having all equipment you need on hand and ready to go, it’s obvious that everyone here is committed to a successful classroom experience. I’m so proud to be a small part of the Baker family.
On a related note, my husband and I recently attended an engineering society luncheon where they introduced two gentlemen who were receiving awards, not necessarily in engineering. Along with their memberships in professional organizations, they mentioned where they had earned their undergraduate and graduate degrees. Even though they weren’t in my discipline, I was so excited to hear that both had graduated from Baker University."
